How to Stay Fit and Healthy in Retirement When you retire, you will probably have many things to do that you have been waiting for a while to complete. It might feel initially that you wondered how you had time to work. However, after a while, you may find that the work has been finished and you have more spare time.

It is important when you get to this point that you try to find ways to stay as active as you can. It is because once you start to slow down, it can be difficult to become active again.

Start Exercising

Exercise is one of the best ways to keep active and maintain a strong body. There are many ways you can exercise, even walking the once or twice a day can be beneficial.

You could also try going to an aerobics class of other fitness class. It has the added benefit of being a social activity as well, so you will be meeting new people.

Another good way to keep active and share some time with your friends is rambling. You can pick a nice area and go for a slow walk through the country.

Keep Mentally Active

As well as staying physically active, you also need to keep your mind active as well. You can do something you love to do, or you can try to challenge yourself to something new.

Start trying to play video games, they are not only good for your mind, but it is also good for your dexterity because you are using your hands and fingers.

You could also consider taking a class in a subject that you want to learn. Many people when they retire take a lot of classes to build up their knowledge and because it is a social experience.

If you are a lover of reading, getting yourself a Kindle or another e-book reader will be a good investment. It means you can put lots of books on there and go reading in the park or in a coffee shop.

Holidays

With all your spare time, why not try to take more holidays? They don’t have to be expensive or all overseas, just a weekend break somewhere can help to get you out and experiencing new things.

You could always buy a new car to start having trips out locally, maybe to the seaside or the country. Cars such as the Polo Vivo are small and economical to drive.

Being retired is also a good excuse to visit friends and family and see how they are doing. You could all take a group trip to see somewhere you haven’t been for a long time. Just because you have retired, doesn’t mean you don’t want to do the things you love. By keeping fit and staying mentally active, you can reduce the risk of becoming immobile or suffering from depression.

You are never too old to try new things or to do something you haven’t done in a long time.
