Sleep apnea can be a scary medical condition to have, particularly as you can actually stop breathing several times in a single night! One of the most frightening things about sleep apnea is that you might not even know that you have it. Typically the symptoms may involve loud snoring or waking up many times during the night. The next day all you may notice is that you are feeling tired or unrested. Determining the cause of sleep apnea is crucial to treating it. Here are the most common solutions offered:

Lifestyle Changes 

Mild sleep apnea is typically caused by an unhealthy lifestyle or other minor medical conditions. For instance, gaining a considerable amount of weight may be the reason that you are suddenly experiencing sleep apnea. In this case, you are going to have to start eating healthier and exercising more. Another bad habit that may be causing your breathing problems is smoking. The irritation caused by the smoke and other components may be triggering the sleep apnea. Your doctor may recommend ceasing your smoking habit if it is the cause. Finally, allergies or irritation may be the reason for your apnea. In this case you need to treat the allergies or to remove any triggers that may be causing it. 

Treatments 

There are many different treatments that can be used to minimize the effects of sleep apnea. In order to reduce the snoring, provent may help to ease the breathing problems. This is typically prescribed for those with milder forms of apnea. For those with more severe cases, there are several appliances which are available. These are typically masks or other equipment that are worn on or around the face. They have different functions such as maintain air pressure or positioning the jaw. Depending on what is causing your apnea, you may be instructed to wear one of these appliances. 

Surgery 

Surgery is usually a last resort method if the other strategies have not helped. It is also used for those with more severe sleep apnea. There are various surgeries for the different types of apnea you may have. This can include removing the excessive tissue from your mouth and throat to ensure that the air passages remain open. It can also involve changing the position of your jaw. This causes there to be more space between tongue and soft palate, thus, minimizing obstruction. There may also be the removal of nasal polyps or fixing a deviated septum. One of the more extreme forms of surgery is known as tracheostomy. This is when there is a new air passage created, typically in your neck. A tube is then inserted. It is kept close during the day but open when you sleep at night. 

Some of these are simple remedies that can be handled at home, such as losing weight. Others involve over the counter treatments. Others still, require a doctor’s prescription or a surgeon’s skilled hand.
