'face' in firewood

 

i have a wood stove, so i buy cords of wood. i noticed early on that the shapes, colors and patterns in the wood were could be intriguing and beautiful.  When hiking in Wyoming i had often photographed trees growing in unexpected places and ways (like with roots entangled with a rock). But i found myself setting pieces of wood aside to photograph before using.  Two years down the line i have a large 'Studies in Wood' file for those shots.  But imagine my surprise a couple of weeks ago when sorting the latest cord (some right size already, some need to be split first) to see this as i moved a section of log:
