In 1954 Swanson sold their first TV Dinners. More than 10 million were sold during the first year of their sale. For about 98 cents, customers could choose among Salisbury steak, meatloaf, fired chicken, or turkey as the main course along with potatoes and peas. Desserts were added eventually. Campbell’s also replaced the aluminum trays that could be used in microwave ovens. As a kid, I remember how much fun they were. I certainly haven’t had one in quite a while.

The 1959 Academy Awards (31st) with Jerry Lewis as the host of the show. The film Gigi won nine Oscars, which at the time was a record until Ben-Hur broke it the next year. Other winners included:

Pierre Trudeau became the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party in 1968 and shortly thereafter, became the prime minister of Canada. He once dated Barbra Streisand and eventually married Margaret Sinclair and became Canada’s glamorous couple. After their divorce in 1984, Trudeau had a romantic relationship with Margot Kidder. Because of his charisma, “Trudeaumania” took hold of Canada during his time in office. Trudeau passed away in 2000.

In 1973, the American League began to use the spot in the lineup called the designated hitter. He is a batter who bats instead of another player, usually the pitcher, and does play a defensive position. Ron Blomberg of the Yankees was the first designated hitter that walked in his first plate appearance. Only the American League uses the designated hitter. The Edgar Martinez Award is given to the best designated hitter in the American League each year.

The Duke Blue Devils won the 1992 NCAA Basketball Tournament defeating the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 71 – 51. Duke was coached by Mike Krzyzewski to claim their second national championship. Steve Fisher coached the Wolverines. Guard Bobby Hurley of duke was named the tournament MVP. The Final Four played the games at the HHH Metrodome in Minneapolis. You watch the entire game here.

Larry Moskal began his career as a Social Studies teacher in 1971. He graduated from the University of Buffalo with degrees in history and education. Larry taught Social Studies for the Ken-Ton School system, a suburban school system north of Buffalo, New York until 2005, and then taught and was the Dean of Students at San Miguel High School in Tucson. At Ken-Ton, he pioneered several online courses for high school students. In the 1980s, he spent three years teaching in Colombia, South America and spent four years at Lewiston-Porter High School. He currently is the PowerSchool Administrator for San Miguel accomplishing his work over the Internet.
