The siege of Chengdu in China began in 1949. The Communist Chinese led by Mao Zedong eventually defeated the Kuomintang led by Chiang Kai-shek at the end of the Chinese Civil War. The war began in 1927 and the end came with the Nationalist Chinese (Kuomintang) evacuating to the island of Formosa and establishing a government there. The communists held control of Mainland China and the era of two Chinas began. The United Sates had heavily supported the Kuomintang army. In 1971, the United Nations removed Nationalist China from its seat and replaced it with The People’s Republic of China.
