East Pakistan declared its independence from West Pakistan in 1971. When Pakistan was created in 1947, Hindu East Pakistan was separated from Muslim West Pakistan by the nation of India. After being dominated by West Pakistan, the people of East Pakistan. A military struggle ensued that resulted in the independence of Bangladesh in December of 1971. Bangladesh joined the United Nations in 1974.

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter brought Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachem Begin of Israel to Camp David in 1978. The following March, a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was signed. The Camp David Accords brought about the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two nations and the demilitarization of the Sinai.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. in 1982. It honors the servicemen who served and died during the Vietnam War. The memorial is located to the northeast of the Lincoln Memorial and is maintained by the National Park Service. Approximately three million people visit the memorial each year. Listed on the monument are the names of the 58,195 soldiers who gave their lives.

In 1999, Dr. Jack Kevorkian was found guilty of second-degree murder for assisting in the death of Thomas Youk in Michigan on November 22, 1968. Kevorkian sometimes called “Dr. Death”, had lost his license to practice medicine and was therefore guilty of administering a controlled substance. After a two-day trial, Kevorkian was found guilty and sentenced to 10-25 years in prison. He was eventually paroled in 2007 and died in 2011.

Larry Moskal began his career as a Social Studies teacher in 1971. He graduated from the University of Buffalo with degrees in history and education. Larry taught Social Studies for the Ken-Ton School system, a suburban school system north of Buffalo, New York until 2005, and then taught and was the Dean of Students at San Miguel High School in Tucson. At Ken-Ton, he pioneered several online courses for high school students. In the 1980s, he spent three years teaching in Colombia, South America and spent four years at Lewiston-Porter High School. He currently is the PowerSchool Administrator for San Miguel accomplishing his work over the Internet.
