President Gerald Ford pardoned former President Richard Nixon in 1974 for any crimes that Nixon may have committed while in office. Ford stated that he felt it was in the best interest of the nation to pardon Nixon and finally end the Watergate scandal. Critics claimed that a “corrupt bargain” must have existed between Ford and Nixon and many historians feel that this decision cost Ford the presidential election of 1976.
