One in 100 women goes through menopause before they reach 40 years of age (DailyMail, Tessa Cunningham, September 2010). You can suspect on early menopause if you are in your 30s and your period is missing for several months or even a year. This probably means that your ovaries stopped producing estrogen for some reason or another. The rich and famous are not resistant to this issue, neither. The actress Angelina Jolie had her ovaries removed because of the increased risk of cancer. This made her one of the early menopausal ladies out there. Here are some of the things she shares about her experience.

Feeling More Secure

The first reason that Angelina Jolie even hit the early menopause is that she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. This surgery followed the double mastectomy that she underwent earlier the same year. Both surgeries were actually preventive. Namely, the doctors discovered that she carries the BRCA1 gene that is responsible for great cancer risks. Her mother died at 56 from cancer, so Jolie wanted to prevent that from happening. Therefore, this surgery makes her feel more secure about her future and the future of her children.

Feeling More Mature

Jolie claims that she feels old and more ‘settled’ now that she entered menopause. Her feeling old is not a bad thing in her world. She also says that she does not feel the need to be young anymore and that she loves feeling mature. This may mean that you will be better off accepting the fact that you are in the early menopause and that you need to make the most of it. It may help to focus on the bad sides of having periods and on the good sides of not having to endure them anymore.

It Does Not Have to Be a Bad Experience

In the same interview, Angelina said that she did not have any bad reactions to her surgeries and that she actually loves her menopause. While some of the symptoms include depression, weight gain, hot flashes and similar issues, there are women that claim that they were able to overcome these things by having a positive attitude. Menopause does not mean that you are not attractive anymore or that you are less of a woman. You just need to focus on your newly found self-confidence and do what you want with your life. One lady described her menopausal experience as finally being the owner of her own skin after years of paying the rent.

Ways to Deal with Early Menopause

To make sure that your experience is a positive one, you need to make sure that you are getting a healthy diet and enough exercise. Quit smoking and alcohol consumption and turn to healthy and good lifestyle. Your food needs to be rich in vitamin D and calcium and you need to make sure that you enjoy some low impact physical activities like yoga, Pilates, tai chi and others. Your natural calcium can come from food like dairy, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, fish, shrimps, but you can also take it in the form of supplements.

Angelina Jolie has been in the spotlight for having such brave and mature choices concerning her health. She is also very positive about her early menopause. However, she is not the only celebrity that says that menopause is much better than it sounds. Others that have similar message to ladies all over the world are Kate Walsh, supermodel Karolina Kurkova, Nia Fisher, and many others. They will all say the same – love yourself and embrace the change.
